Attachment Style

In the course of struggling with mental health symptoms, many people experience difficulties in interpersonal relationships with family, friends, and significant others. Often, people are not aware that the patterns they repeat in their closest relationships are likely influenced by childhood experiences and the development of attachment style. Some may wonder why most of their relationships seem to repeat the same pattern, and this may be the answer.

Attachment style revolves around how one communicates and interacts with those around them, and their willingness to develop new relationships with others. Those with secure attachment style are confident and comfortable in their interactions, whereas those with insecure attachment may be looking for a partner that will duplicate the patterns they developed in childhood. For example, someone with an anxious attachment style may be classified as “clingy” or “desperate”, taking actions that push their partner away and thereby reinforcing their anxious nature in relationships.

So the question becomes: what can we do if we have an insecure attachment style? Recognition is the first step; working towards breaking negative patterns and behavior that have been with us most of our lives.
