The Value-Driven Life

What does it mean to be your authentic self? How do we live happier lives free from internal conflict? One way to improve our overall mental health and wellness is to focus on living a value-driven life. This means focusing on our internal core values and having our actions align with those values.

Examples of those values may include kindness, friendship, loyalty, or recognition, among others. The first step is to identify what our core values are, or which traits matter most to us in our daily lives. Once we have done that, then we need to determine what it would mean to live by that standard every day. For example, if one of your core values is openness, yet you tend to keep your feelings hidden from your spouse, then you are not living by your core value.

So here comes the hard part. Now we need to identify when we are not living up to that standard, and what stops us from doing so. In the situation mentioned earlier, maybe you don’t feel comfortable divulging your feelings to your spouse because you were judged or bullied by others in the past. It takes true introspection to investigate why our values and actions do not line up, which can be quite difficult when it comes to acknowledging behavior that is making us unhappy.

Truly living a principled, authentic life can be next to impossible, as we all will slip up from time to time. The important part is to strive to live by our core values as best we can, and to acknowledge when we slip up so we can learn from our mistakes. Living a value-driven life may help to resolve uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, as well as revealing inner strength and happiness we may not have felt before.
