It is just about impossible for anyone to avoid the firestorm of vitriol, anger, sensationalism, and negativity that is American politics right now. Turn on your TV, look at social media content, or speak to friends and family and you will likely encounter at least one piece of political news/opinion. Political depression may result from the inundation of negativity in our political climate, as well as feeling as though our destiny and future are not in our control. This feeling of hopelessness related to political unrest and confusion may exacerbate depressive episodes, particularly for those individuals that consume a lot of news and politically-related material. Politically-related feelings may even include fear and paranoia, as some in our society may be concerned over their livelihoods or being excluded socially based on political beliefs.
The first thing we can do to avoid political depression is to take back control of our thoughts, feelings, and actions. The belief that outside influences have control over our lives may make any attempts at recovery feel hopeless and pointless. By limiting time spent involved with political matters, we can regain control and spend our time on more enjoyable and healthy pursuits. For those that may be concerned about being uninformed, consider limitations on your news and social media viewing, or restrict them to a certain time of day.
Finally, if you are feeling a loss of control related to the current political climate, it may help to get involved. Volunteer or even run for office! This might help to regain control by being part of the process. If you want things to change, attack it from the inside! That line of thinking can be beneficial when confronting any form of negativity in your life.
