STDs on the Rise

Reports indicate that cases of STDs, including syphilis, gonnorrhea, and chlamydia have been rising in the last four years. These three diseases are shown to be curable with antibiotics. However, given the prevalence of these diagnoses, some strains of gonorrhea are becoming resistant to antibiotics.

So far, it has been difficult to identify why cases of STDs are on the rise. Suggestions include a decrease in condom use and possibly even increased popularity of internet dating sites like Tinder. With most being aware that HIV is treatable with medication, the level of fear and vigilance in relation to STDs may be decreasing from where it was in earlier decades.

All of this comes together to suggest that awareness of the risks of STDs, as well as regular testing, needs to be increased for everyone that is sexually active. This is particularly relevant in that many of the cases of these STDs may present without victims, and as such people may not know that they have contracted an STD prior to passing it on to someone else. STDs can also lead to sterility or infertility and pregnancy complications if left untreated.

See your doctor as soon as possible if you have not been tested or if it has been some time since your last test. Always use protection, and reach out to Main St. Psychiatry if you would like more information or need a test ordered.
