Diet and Depression

With the holiday season approaching, food can be on the forefront of a lot of people’s minds. However, new preliminary research shows that one’s diet (especially those heavy in fast food) can be linked to depression. This research, conducted in Australia, showed that those with access to fast food tend to have a higher occurrence of depression than those without that access. The diet of the latter group consisted mostly of fresh seafood. Blood samples were taken from about 100 people in total, and 19 of them presented with symptoms of depression. Of those 19, 16 were from the area where fast food was easily obtainable. The blood samples of the “fast food” group showed a higher level of a fatty acids associated with depression, while the blood samples of the “seafood” group showed a higher level of fatty acids associated with protection against depression.

So what does this information mean for you? Depression is estimated to occur in one out of every seven people, so if you suffer from depressive symptoms, keeping an eye on your food intake might help to alleviate some of your concerns. Please keep in mind that altering your diet likely won’t completely eliminate depression, as there are several social, environmental, and genetic factors that come into play, but eating a healthier diet can contribute beneficially to both your physical and mental health.
