As a follow up to our blog on vaccinations, in case you think vaccinations are not important or necessary, check this out.
Rockland County New York is having a measles emergency. As of March 26, 2019, they have banned unvaccinated children from enclosed public places. This order extends to all schools, houses of worship and shopping malls in the county, which is north of New York City. This is because of how contagious measles is. Rockland County has been fighting measles since last October and has not been able to get a handle on the outbreak. There have been 153 cases so far which is the largest outbreak among several currently happening in the US. It is the longest outbreak since the US was declared free of endemic measles in 2000. The Rockland County measles emergency order will be in effect for 30 days.
We are so blessed to have vaccinations and so used to there not being outbreaks of childhood diseases, that we have forgotten that these illnesses used to cause epidemics that killed both children and adults. In the 1950’s polio was such a devastating disease that there were thousands of people condemned to be in iron lungs to help them breathe for their whole lives.
Please take advantage of the opportunity to protect yourself, your children and the community at large from illnesses that can be devastating and get vaccinations.
