Choose Wisely, But Choose!

When you’re driving down the road and you come across a roadblock, there’s usually a detour sign letting you know how to get around it. But with careers, relationships, financial issues and life’s other stressors, things can be a bit trickier.

We often feel stuck. Going out to eat, we often choose from the safe few restaurants, though there are hundreds a short distance away. We tend to make similar lifestyle choices, and feel as if we are in a rut. Research points out that the more choices we have, the more difficult it is to choose. In today’s world there are hundreds, if not thousands of choices. Add a bit of depression, and it is normal to go from stuck to completely overwhelmed.

There are ways to explore options without increasing our own distress.

Start by imagining the problem, or the choice you are making, outside of yourself. If a friend were in a similar situation, what advice would you give them? Grab a piece of paper and write down any option you can think of, quickly, without considering the merits of each option. Then go back and evaluate them.

Don’t think while you’re sitting in front of a TV or computer, or even sitting at all. Get up and go for a walk. If it’s raining or cold, walk in a nearby mall or store.

Try to think of your choice as an opportunity, rather than a problem. And if you can’t make any progress at all, do something healthy. Get some exercise, get out in the sun, or eat a nutritious meal.

If you are still unable to make any progress, come and see us. It’s a wonder what an outside perspective can bring. Main St. Psychiatry has caring professionals available to help you feel more comfortable and confident in your decision-making process. Call us at 815-526-3781 for more information.
